Seal a Drafty Door Without Fighting the Latch

The right door seal closes the air gap while letting the door work normally. More material is not always a better fit.

Diagnose the gap

Check the perimeter in good light with the door closed. Look for worn seals and daylight without putting your hands near pinch points. A door that rubs, sags or will not latch may need a hardware or alignment repair before any seal is replaced.

Match the existing system

Take measurements and identify whether the door uses a kerf-in, surface-mounted or adhesive seal. Photograph its profile and compare replacement instructions. Use a product intended for the location and exposure. Do not block drainage paths or change the operation of a rated fire door.

Fit, then verify

For a straightforward replacement, follow the manufacturer’s removal and installation instructions. Prepare a clean surface where required. Test the full swing and latch after each section. Stop if the seal makes the door difficult to close; forcing it can disguise an alignment problem.

Inspect after normal use

Check that the seal remains seated and is not bunching at a corner. Look for new water intrusion after rain. Record the product used so that the next replacement is easier. More invasive routing or threshold work belongs with a skilled carpenter when you lack the equipment or experience.

Your next steps

  1. Check alignment and identify the current seal.
  2. Match the profile and follow the product instructions.
  3. Verify closing, latching and drainage.
Field note

An easy-to-operate exterior door is part of the acceptance test.
